At which command level is an EOA required?

The requirement for an Equal Opportunity Advisor (EOA) is established at the Brigade (BDE) level and above. EOAs are appointed to ensure that all personnel have equal opportunity in their workplace regardless of their background or personal characteristics. This role is particularly critical at higher command levels where there is a larger and more diverse population of soldiers, and the complexities of managing equal opportunities can be more significant.

At the Brigade level and higher, the EOA is responsible for implementing and overseeing equal opportunity policies and programs, addressing discrimination and harassment complaints, and fostering a culture of inclusiveness within the unit. This strategic placement ensures that leaders receive guidance and support in maintaining a respectful environment, thus promoting overall unit cohesion and effectiveness.

At squad and company levels, the focus tends to be more operational and tactical, and while there may be equal opportunity representatives or responsibilities, the structured and formal role of an EOA is specifically mandated for Brigade and higher levels to adequately address the complexities faced in larger units.
